The Spectrum of the Black Hole X-ray Nova V404 Cygni in Quiescence as Measured by Xmm-newton
We present XMM-Newton observations of the black hole X-ray nova V404 Cyg in quiescence. Its quiescent spectrum can be best fitted by a simple power-law with slope Γ ∼ 2. The spectra are consistent with that expected for the advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF). V404 Cyg was roughly equal in luminosity compared to the previous observation of Chandra. We see variability of a factor of 4 duri...
متن کاملThe 2015 Decay of the Black Hole X-ray Binary V404 Cygni: Robust Disk-jet Coupling and a Sharp Transition into Quiescence
We present simultaneous X-ray and radio observations of the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cygni at the end of its 2015 outburst. From 2015 July 11–August 5 we monitored V404 Cygni with Chandra, Swift, and NuSTAR in the X-ray, and with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the Very Long Baseline Array in the radio, spanning a range of luminosities that were poorly covered during its previous ou...
متن کاملZooming in on a sleeping giant: milliarcsecond HSA imaging of the black hole binary V404 Cyg in quiescence
Observations of the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cyg with the very long baseline interferometer HSA (the High Sensitivity Array) have detected the source at a frequency of 8.4GHz, providing a source position accurate to 0.3mas relative to the calibrator source. The observations put an upper limit of 1.3mas on the source size (5.2AU at 4 kpc) and a lower limit of 7× 10 K on its brightness temper...
متن کاملBlack Hole Binary Dynamics
We discuss a new N-body simulation method for studying black hole binary dynamics. This method avoids previous numerical problems due to large mass ratios and trapped orbits with short periods. A treatment of relativistic effects is included when the associated time-scale becomes small. Preliminary results with up to N = 2.4×10 particles are obtained showing systematic eccentricity growth until...
متن کاملBinary black hole mergers
www.physicstoday.org After decades of effort, numerical relativists can now simulate the inspiral and merger of two black holes orbiting each other. That computational triumph has come none too soon—physicists are on the verge of detecting gravitational waves for the first time, and at long last they know what to look for. Black holes are strong-field objects whose properties are governed by Ei...
